TAMPA — The Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association (PIABA) recently announced that Scott C. Ilgenfritz is the recipient of PIABA’s Distinguished Service Award.  PIABA is a national bar association comprised of attorneys dedicated to the representation of individual investors in disputes with brokerage firms, stockbrokers, investment advisors, and other members of the securities industry.

In addition, Scott has been named by Best Lawyers in America for 2020 as “Lawyer of the Year”, for Tampa, Florida in the category of Litigation – Securities.

The PIABA Distinguished Service Award is a life-time achievement award in recognition of an individual having demonstrated a commitment to promoting the interests of public investors in securities arbitration. Scott has been an active member of PIABA since 1997. Scott was President of the association in 2012-2013 and served as an elected member of the Board of Directors from 2008-2017.  He is the ninth recipient of this prestigious award.

The Best Lawyers in America “Lawyer of the Year” award is particularly significant because only a single lawyer in each practice area in a major metropolitan area is honored with that distinction.

The Best Lawyers in America® is the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession.  Lawyers on the Best Lawyers list are divided by geographic region and practice areas.  They are reviewed by their peers based on professional expertise and undergo an authentication process to make sure they are in currently practicing and in good standing.

Scott has been with Johnson Pope for his entire legal career, beginning in 1984. He practices in the firm’s Tampa office.  A primary focus of Scott’s law practice since 1992 has been the representation of investors in claims against brokerage firms, stock brokers, investment advisors and other financial professionals for negligence, breach of fiduciary duties, fraud and other wrongdoing. Guy M. Burns, managing partner of Johnson Pope, said “over the past 36 years, we have seen Scott develop into one of the best and most respected business and investment trial lawyers in the country.  It is an honor to have him as a partner in our firm.”

Since 1997, Scott has been board certified by The Florida Bar as a Business Litigation Specialist.  Over his 36 year legal career, Scott has represented clients in a wide variety of business and commercial disputes.  These matters have included securities arbitration and litigation, contract litigation, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty claims, limited liability company and corporate litigation, joint venture disputes, shareholder disputes, legal and accounting malpractice claims, real estate litigation, real estate broker commission disputes, and a variety of other business litigation.
