Johnson Pope is proud to congratulate shareholder Michael C. Markham on receiving two distinguished honors in 2026 that recognize his longstanding commitment to the bankruptcy profession, public service, and access to justice.

Most recently, Mike was presented with the Don M. Stichter Award for Exceptional Service at the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association (TBBBA) Annual Dinner. The award recognizes attorneys who have demonstrated significant and sustained contributions to the bankruptcy community, particularly through pro bono service and efforts that benefit underserved individuals and families.

Earlier this year, Mike was also named Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by the Northern District of Florida Bankruptcy Bar Association (NDFLBBA) in recognition of his work advancing access to bankruptcy representation for individuals who otherwise could not afford legal assistance.

A Career Dedicated to Bankruptcy Law and Public Service

For more than three decades, Mike has built a reputation as one of Florida’s leading bankruptcy and insolvency attorneys. As a shareholder at Johnson Pope, he has represented debtors, creditors, trustees, committees, and other parties in complex bankruptcy matters throughout the country.

In addition to his private practice, Mike serves as Director of the Florida State University College of Law Bankruptcy Pro Bono Clinic, where law students gain hands-on experience representing individuals facing financial hardship while receiving mentorship and practical training in bankruptcy law. Through the clinic, qualifying individuals can receive legal assistance navigating bankruptcy proceedings that might otherwise be inaccessible due to financial constraints.

Mike’s work with the clinic played a significant role in his recognition as the NDFLBBA’s 2026 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year and reflects his ongoing commitment to expanding access to legal services throughout Florida.

Honoring the Legacy of Don M. Stichter

The Don M. Stichter Award for Exceptional Service carries special significance within Florida’s bankruptcy community.

The award was established by the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association to honor the legacy of Don M. Stichter, a highly respected bankruptcy attorney whose career was defined by professionalism, integrity, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to pro bono service. The award recognizes attorneys who have gone above and beyond in serving both the legal profession and the broader community.

Receiving this honor places Mike among a select group of attorneys recognized for making a meaningful and lasting impact on the bankruptcy bar and the individuals it serves.

Commitment to Access to Justice

Access to legal representation remains one of the greatest challenges facing individuals experiencing financial distress. Through his volunteer efforts, educational leadership, and advocacy for pro bono initiatives, Mike has consistently worked to help bridge that gap.

His involvement with organizations dedicated to improving access to bankruptcy assistance aligns with broader efforts throughout Florida’s bankruptcy courts and bar associations to ensure that individuals facing financial hardship have access to quality legal guidance and representation.

These recognitions reflect not only Mike’s professional accomplishments but also his dedication to serving the community and advancing the legal profession.

Congratulations, Mike

We are honored to celebrate Mike’s achievements and grateful for the leadership, professionalism, and service he brings to our firm, clients, and community every day.

Congratulations, Mike, on these well-deserved honors.
