Joseph J. Weissman, a partner in the firm’s Tampa Office, is an experienced litigator and trial lawyer specializing in commercial litigation, trademark, copyright and patent litigation, trade secret litigation, computer litigation and computer-related disputes involving cybersquatting and domain names. He also regularly handles trademark and copyright registrations as well as opposition and cancellation proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to his intellectual property practice, Joe handles complex commercial litigation such as antitrust issues and various other complex business matters. Joe practices regularly in federal courts both in Florida and around the country as well as in Florida state courts.
Joe is active in the International Trademark Association and continues to serve on its Internet Committee. Previously, Joe served on the Editorial Board of The Trademark Reporter. His article analyzing legal developments of the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act appeared in the Trademark Reporter under the title: The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act: Developments Through Its First Six Years, 95 TMR 1058 (2005).
Joe graduated with honors in 1994 from the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of The George Washington Law Review and member of the Moot Court Board. He is the author of Upping the Ante: Allowing Indian Tribes to Sue States in Federal Court Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, 62 GEO. WASH. L. REV. 123 (1993). Joe received his bachelor’s degree in economics and history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990.
Joe gained admission to the Florida Bar in 1994 and is also a member of the bar of the District of Columbia. He is also a member of the bars of the following courts: United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit; United States District Courts for the Middle, Northern & Southern Districts of Florida, United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
Joe is also a member of the British-American Project which exists to help maintain and enrich the long-standing relationship between Britain and The United States. The British-American Project is made up of people who have each attained distinction in their particular fields.
After practicing at a large litigation firm in Washington, D.C. for five years, Joe moved to Tampa in 1999. He is married with three daughters.
